Location: 2298 Woodard Rd, Windsor, NC
Located southeast of Windsor on the banks of the Cashie River is the San Souci Ferry, which today is one of only three still operating cable ferries remaining in the state of North Carolina. A relic of the past that has stood the test of time, the San Souci Ferry has guided cars across the Cashie River since the 1930s, when the NC Department of Transportation first took over the ferry route. Prior to that, ferries had been in place to help travelers crossing at San Souci since all the way back in the early 1800s.
The ride across is a brief five minutes and is completely free of charge, although visitors coming in from the north end of the Cashie River may occasionally have to wait longer for the ferry to cross the river before being picked up. If you arrive at the San Souci Ferry and the barge is on the other side of the river, simply blow your car horn to summon the ferry. The ferry carries a maximum of two vehicles per trip, and will shut down in the event of high waters or bad weather.
Also located at the ferry dock is a boat launch with a small parking area for boat trailers.
